The Asus Transformer Prime TF201-B1-CG 32GB Tablet, puts it into the same category as Apple’s iPad is far more versatile as it opens the world of Android-based computing to the user. The Transformer’s 10.1-inch display is slightly larger than the Apple display and is driven by the Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad-Core Mobile processor. The processor is interesting in that it is a power-miser as you have up to 12 hours of battery. Adding the docking station turns the Transformer tablet into a netbook-style PC and does add up more six hours of power to the mix so that one can use it, with the docking station, for up to 18 hours, a valuable extra.

Powered by lithium-ion batteries, the Asus offers 1 GB DDR memory, which, judging by the way tablets are made today, is equipped with the Android v3.2 operating system, upgradeable to v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and 32 GB of eMMC microSD flash memory, expandable to 64 GB. Of note is the slightly recessed on/off switch that can sometimes be hard to access and, once one has accessed it, the switch can be equally hard to shut down. Over time and with us, one should become able to use this feature easily. Once it is mated to its docking station this should become a moot issue as most docking stations allow powerup from the keyboard.

Internet-ready, the Transformer recognizes WiFi standards 802.11 b/g/n. This means that, with the right Android-based app installed, one should be able to recognize local hotspots so that the Transformer is seldom, if ever, out of touch with the Internet. Since it also recognizes WiFi b/g, it should also be compatible with one’s home router so that it can be used as part of a small home network. The Transformer also makes use of Bluetooth technology so that one can sync up a mobile phone or any other Bluetooth device as Bluetooth will recognize up to 12 devices. Interestingly, if one has a Bluetooth-enabled PC, one should be able to sync the PC to the tablet quite easily, expanding the use of Bluetooth.

Since the Transformer is equipped with Android V4.0, one now has access to over 200,000 apps, however, one should be aware that even with large amounts of memory, the more apps and pages you install, the longer it will take to boot up and use. In initial startup mode, the Transformer boots quite quickly, however, adding apps means the operating system has to work through them and since it is running only 1 GB of DDRR memory which also probably supports the high-resolution screen, as well, it will take a bit to have things running. Once they are running, though, the Asus is very quick.

The Transformer’s screen resolution is 1280 by 800, making it easily interfaceable with high-definition video devices. Indeed, one of the connectors available is a microHDMI. Using the proper adapter cable, one can interface the Transformer with any HDMI-compatible device. There is also a microUSB output available that is used as part of the charging system.

A capable videography device, the Transformer is equipped with front and rear-facing camera lenses. The front-facing camera offers 1.2MP resolution so the tablet can be used for videoconferencing. The 8MP rear-facing camera with 2X and 3X zoom ability offers excellent image quality and the ability to take and push your images directly to the Internet. One interesting item to note is that in the last year or so there seems to be a resolution race going one among tablet makers to determine which one can deliver the highest resolution so that now tablets are becoming very capable videography devices, especially with 64 GB of flash memory installed.

Closely bound to social media, the Transformer offers Google’s full range of built-in social networking features that should include the recently introduced Google+, as well as access to Google maps and Google earth. These features will work well with the built-in GPS feature so that, with the proper app installed, one can use the Transformer as the heart of a navigation system.

Sound output is good, using SonicMaster technology and built-in speakers. There is also a built-in headphone output so you can interface a topnotch set of headphones such as those offered by Bose with the Asus.

The list of features for the Transformer just goes on and on as it offers, as noted, high-definition video compatibility, as well as WXGA standard video. The tablet also has angle-sensing technology so the video will appear normal at no matter what angle you are holding it at. The screen, itself, is a sensitive touchscreen that features tough Gorilla Glass so it should resist most normal use. The screen is viewable at up to 178 degrees off center which makes provides a wide-angle view and makes it highly visible.

The add-on keyboard/docking station will actually complete the Transformer by providing a standard QWERTY keyboard, making it much more convenient to use.

At 10.35 inches by 7.12 inches by 0.33 inches and weighing slightly less than two pounds, the Asus Transformer is one of the hottest-sellers on the Tablet market today and with the range of features it offers, there’s little wonder why.

The introduction of the Apple iPhone 4S in Beijing turned ugly Friday morning when Apple failed to open its flagship store and a frustrated crowd reacted by pelting the store’s gleaming glass walls with eggs.

Apple said in a statement that it had temporarily suspended sales of all iPhones at its five mainland China stores out of concern for the safety of customers and employees. The phones will still be offered online, through Apple’s official partner, Unicom, and at authorized resellers. The statement did not say when Apple stores would resume selling the iPhone 4S.

Demand for iPhones in China far exceeds supply, which has spawned an army of scalpers who hire migrant workers to snap up products that the scalpers then resell at much higher prices.

The horde of more than 1,000 people who gathered outside the store Friday in the Sanlitun district of Beijing included organized teams of migrant workers, identifiable by matching armbands or hats. Some of the migrant workers said they were bused in and promised payment of 100 renminbi, or about $16, for purchasing a phone.

Wary of unrest, police ordered the store not to open, according to one source familiar with the situation. Furious, some would-be customers threw eggs. Police dispersed the crowd and temporarily cordoned off the store.

Those recruited by scalpers were particularly angry. Some said the store’s closing meant that they would get only 10 renminbi, meant as a food allowance, after standing in line all night in freezing temperatures.

It was the second time in less than a year that the Sanlitun store had been forced to temporarily close while trying to offer a new product. In May, four people were injured and a glass door was smashed when a crowd waiting to buy theiPad 2 turned disorderly, according to China Daily.

At Apple’s other Beijing store and three stores in Shanghai, the iPhone 4S sold out quickly, leaving some disappointed, but with no reports of incidents.

China is Apple’s fastest-growing market: with just five of the company’s stores, it accounts for one-sixth of its global sales. Timothy D. Cook, chief executive of Apple, said last week that “customer response to our products in China has been off the charts.”

If you have a business IT support contract from your IT Support Company you would expect IT Support for your Windows XP computers to be included.

But that may not be quite the case

The problem is that Microsoft Windows XP is now rather old –not quite prehistoric in computer terms, but at least Jacobean!

Microsoft goes through a phased withdrawal of its products to give users a very reasonable amount of time to upgrade. Three are 3 main phases:

Mainstream support – full support including bug fixes, security fixes and design improvements. Microsoft commits to provide mainstream support a product for a minimum of 5 years after release.
Extended support – after 5 years or 2 years after the replacement product comes out it goes into Extended Support with only bug fixes and security updates.
Custom support – after 5 years on Extended Support (or 2 years after the second successor product is released). During this phase Microsoft only supports the product on a chargeable basis. In other words for all practical purposes it’s unsupported for small to medium sized businesses.

Microsoft no longer provides what it calls “Mainstream Support” for Windows XP and hasn’t done so for almost 3 years. Microsoft Windows XP is now on Extended Support until early 2014.
It’s not reasonable to expect your business IT support company to support a piece of software that the author themselves no longer supports. The problem is that usually your Business IT Support Company hasn’t made you aware of this IT Support problem.

What does this mean for Windows XP IT Support?

Microsoft Windows XP went out of Mainstream Support on April 2009. If you are running Windows XP you should be aware that Microsoft only provides security updates now – no design updates, no bug fixes.

If you do have a problem Microsoft aren’t going to fix it for you unless you are very important or you pay them a lot of money. Neither of these applies to many SMB’s, if any at all.

In short your Business IT Support Company will be unable to help you with most Windows XP problems, because it’s out of their control to do so. However because XP has been around for quite some time most of the problems have been ironed out.

What does your IT Support Company say?

Most IT companies will have a clause buried deep in their contract that absolves them of any responsibility for products that are no longer supported or fully supported by the software author.

At face-value that appears to be perfectly reasonable. After all, if Microsoft isn’t willing to provide support how can your Business IT Support Company help you?

On the other hand it’s not reasonable of your IT Support Company to keep quiet about it.

I’m sure they aren’t deliberately hiding the Microsoft Windows XP IT Support issue from you. They probably think you know or they aren’t proactive at keeping you informed.

Why do you need to know that Windows XP is out of Mainstream IT Support?

You need to budget to replace these computers. Across the entire business this could be quite a considerable cost. Even for a small or medium sized business the costs could run to tens of thousands. That’s a cost that most SMB’s will want to know about well in advance.

And just in case your IT Support Company isn’t keeping you informed

If you have any Microsoft Windows XP computers you should upgrade to Windows 7 within the next few years. The best way of doing this is the plannedreplacementof old XP machines as they come to the end of their life. They should be replaced with newer PC’s running Windows 7 or Windows 8 in the not too distant future
